Robert Thomas, AIA
Principal + Director of Design

Robert is a partner in the practice and leads the overall design direction of the office, working collaboratively with a team of talented architects and designers. With over 18 years of experience, his strength is in the shaping, interpretation and translation of conceptual ideas to built form, with a genuine commitment to the realities of budget, schedule and construction technology. With a joint graduate concentration in both architecture + landscape, Bob is a strong advocate of clear, idea driven, site sensitive design, with an emphasis on the full integration of building technology and landscape architecture. On most of his design award winning projects he has remained closely involved from initial conceptual design through construction documentation and administration.

Bob has served as a lead designer and architect on projects of a wide range of scales, typologies, and budgets that have been consistently recognized for Design Excellence, with over 28 Design Awards from the American Institute of Architects and the International Interior Design Association in just the past 9 years. These projects range in scope and scale from a 1200sf interior upfit to a $90M higher education project. In 2007, he received an AIA NC Young Architect Scholarship. In 2008 he received the Boston Society of Architects’ Young Architect Award.

Prior to joining VINES Architecture, Bob was a Principal at Hobgood Architects, a Raleigh architecture studio that has received over 50 Design Awards from the AIA. There he led both the design and technical execution of projects and was a close collaborator with Kenneth E Hobgood, FAIA, who is recognized as one of the most noteworthy modern architects in the Southeast. For over eight years, he was an integral part of all design work and project detailing in the office. Prior to that, Bob spent four years as a Design Lead with The Freelon Group (now Perkins+Will), where he was named the youngest associate in the 60 person firm and worked closely with Principal and Vice President, Victor Vines. At Freelon, Bob served as one of two office-wide Design Studio Leaders and played a key role in several of the office’s significant Museum, Cultural and Higher Education Projects.

In addition to his professional experience, Bob also holds a regular appointment as Professor in Practice at the NCSU College of Design, where he teaches advanced architectural design studios at the graduate level. Since 2004, he has led studios that have specifically addressed the integration of Site + Environment, Materials+Technology, and also has taught the 5th Year Comprehensive Design Studio, which deals specifically with the full integration of design, detailing and systems technology. He has been invited to participate in both faculty and alumni exhibitions and regularly serves as an invited critic for design reviews at the College of Design. He has also served as a visiting critic at Duke University, Tulane University, Lawrence Technological University, and at the University of Michigan. He serves as an appointed member of the College of Design Advisory Board, and is an invited member of the Triangle Area Design Society.
