DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA PUBLIC LIBRARY - WOODRIDGE LIBRARY

The new Woodridge Library is located in a largely residential area in northeast Washington, DC, close to the Maryland border. The new library will replace the existing library currently on site and create a new and vibrant space that will significantly contribute to the growth of the surrounding communities. The site, which is located along a major thoroughfare, Rhode Island Avenue, only at its northwest corner, is also bordered by two smaller residential streets at the north and west edges. Along the southern edge, a large public park serves as an active space for families and recreational programs. The topography on the site slopes heavily from north to south allowing opportunities for views of the trees and green space from within the library. Given the site conditions and slope, key elements in the exploration included providing significant visibility to the library for those traveling along Rhode Island Avenue as well as providing a clear connection between the north edge of the park and the library.

The proposed solutions focused on placing the building along the western edge of the site in order to maximize both visibility and views out. Active program areas were placed on the second floor in the northwest corner of the building to allow for visibility from the roadways while reading areas, both indoor and outdoor, were located along the south side of the building, providing views and interaction with the park. The staff areas, meeting spaces, and book stacks, were centrally located, allowing for ease of access, while not detracting from the prominent views from within the building. The western edge of the site was developed as a large public plaza, allowing people to easily approach the building from the north and south, while parking was located both beneath the building and along the eastern edge of the site, minimizing its affect on views from within the library.
